Is Keyword Research Still Relevant? How to Find Profitable Keywords?

“How do I get more search engine traffic?”

It’s a question I hear from bloggers all the time.

Website traffic is one of the crucial factors that can make or break your website’s success. Unfortunately, most bloggers lack website traffic because they don’t know how to optimize their pages for search engines.

If you find profitable keywords and use them at exact places on your pages, you can bring massive visitors from search engines. Thanks to Google’s Hummingbird update, the usage of keywords has been completely changed. Google used to give top rankings for the web pages that had the exact matching keywords.

That’s when keyword stuffing became famous. Once it became spam, Google started rolling out updates like Hummingbird to move their results from word matching onto matching based on intent. It means that the Google has started using LSI keywords to a rank web page than giving rewards for keyword stuffed pages.

Keyword research is not about just increasing your website traffic, but it’s mostly about getting the right visitors to your sites.

Keyword Research: Does It Matter?

Gone are the days where you can only go to a keyword research tool, enter a keyword and come out with a list of terms. Today, things have changed a lot!

Keyword usage has evolved. If you use the same SEO tactics that worked over a year ago, it won’t work now. So make sure to focus on giving a better experience to your website visitors.

People still use keywords to find the results they’re looking for. So keyword research is still relevant and uses widely useful if done right.

Just to give you an example, see how many results are coming up when you type the phrase “keyword research” on Google.

keyword-research-still-matter

That’s a whopping number, right?

Did you know the top search results for any competitive query like “keyword research” always includes results to news sites, in-depth articles or the authority sites?

That’s the reason you need to focus on finding less competitive keywords. When performing keyword research, relevancy is the key. If you concentrate on finding the right keywords, you’ll get the right kind of visitors who are interested in your stuff.

Say No to Keyword Stuffing

Whether you agree it or not, keyword usage is the key to increase your search engine traffic. But most bloggers, who want to optimize the blog posts or pages by stuffing the same keywords again and again, forget about top rankings on Google search at least.

Keyword stuffing is considered as spam activity by Google, and it will penalize all the sites that use keyword stuffing. Instead of keyword stuffing, make use of LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords to rank higher in Google search results.

Also, make sure to use long tail keywords on your blog posts to increase blog traffic for several keywords at a time.

Why Find Profitable Keywords (Long Tail Keywords)?

Did you know the key to SEO success? It is finding and using the long tail keywords on your pages.

Long tail keywords are often easy to rank and send more visitors to your web sites because they include more than two keywords. Here’s a simple example that explains you the main difference between the short tail keywords and long tail keywords.

Short-tail keyword: “Fitness.”

Long tail keyword: “Fitness tips for beginners.”

See, ranking higher in the Google search results for short tail keywords like “Fitness” is almost impossible without building thousands of quality backlinks. But if you’ve in-depth articles that focus on long tail keywords, you can easily outrank your competitors. That’s why you should consider using the long tail keyword in your SEO strategy.

Exact Tools to Find the Best Keywords

Below are the right tools to find profitable keywords for your blog/site.

This is developed by Google and gives plenty of keyword suggestions based on the queries you enter on Keyword Planner. Final Thoughts About Keyword Research

Keyword research is still relevant and widely useful if you are targeting the right keywords instead of focusing on competition. It’s always better to rank for long tail keywords if you have a relatively new website.

Getting more search engine traffic to your websites is relatively hard if you don’t have enough backlinks from trusted sources in your niche. So, use link building strategies such as blogger outreach, guest blogging, infographics to boost your search traffic and rankings.

Use keyword research tools to find profitable keywords when doing keyword research for your websites. Let me know if you have any questions related to researching keywords and if you like this post, please share it with others.

  10. Hi Anil,

This is a very useful article. Keyword research will always be there. The basic reason is Google Algo is nothing but a program only and based on some parameter it has give priority to one content to another.
Although there are many pro tools, GKT is the best to start with as a beginner. If one is not comfortable with how to do proper research, then those pro-tools will also not be able to help him.
Thanks for sharing this worthy article. Looking forward to read more like this. 🙂

    1. That’s true Google keyword tool is a great tool. Along with this, I would recommend you give a try to either Moz.com or SEMrush.com to take your blog traffic to the next level. I have used both and I really love them. If you go by cost, SEMrush is more economical.

  16. Hi Anil Bro,
Keyword research is very important thing but some blogger ignore it is help us increase our traffic and earning. Thanks for sharing with us and guest post keep up it.
    Have a nice week ahead.

  17. According to me, Keyword research is still relevant and is the most important thing to do if you want to get success online.
However, now you need to consider a lot of different factors when find keywords. Long tail keywords are not enough, you have to look at the “allinurl”, “allintext” and “allinurl” parameters as well to how much competition you are going to face if you go with your researched keyword.

    1. Well said. We need to do proper keyword research and analyse the competition for the chosen terms before start writing contents for them. There is no point in going for a keyword where you are seeing low search volume and high competition.

  18. good and informative article, keyword analysis is a first core part of SEo which decide your post ranking into google, if you target low competition keyword then you can easily rank these type keyword into google if keyword having very low competition.
I love keyword planner or long tail pro tool both are best tool for keyword analysis..

    Regards
    Mohd Arif

  19. Hey Anil,
First of all thanks for sharing such a great article once again.
Well, I think finding relevant keywords is a must thing to consider because better rankings for targeted keywords can help us to grab more traffic for our website.

  20. Keyword research is key. I first identify good informative content. Then I perform keyword research to know how to maximize traffic for that content. Once the traffic is there the top level content takes over and user satisfaction leads to return visitors.

  21. Hosting, Insurance and Lawyer are still on the top after so many year, But to find most relevant i use keyword planner tools. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Nirmala Santhakumar

Good that you’re using Keyword planner tools James, it is an awesome resource to grab the keywords, keep coming!

But today u gave the idea of wordtracker & Long Trail pro due to that site ranking automatically starts increasing.
    Thanks for sharing that data

  28. Yes, Keyword research is still important , without targeting you can’t get good results. if you can’t afford Paid software then its ok because keyword planner is best one.

  29. Keyword research is a very important part of blogging and it is very helpful for the blogger if he/she put the best keyword in their articles title.
BTW this post is really great and noteworthy. so thanks for sharing the information with us.
    Have a pleasant week ahead:)

  30. just loving the stuff. The tools are you have mentioned are just awesome. But some of them are pro versions. Can u tell me how to utilise them in a proper way. 🙂

  31. Firstly i must say, an excellent post.

I have one doubt. When you searched in google for the keyword
Seo keyword tool it showed high competition but in traffic travis, the same showed that it’s relatively to rank. Aren’t the two results contradicting?

And other thing I wanted to know, how many global broad and exact searches must a keyword have on average to be a strong keyword?

And should the competition be low or high?

    Thanks in advance:)
